I Still Believe in Mermaids.

Okay, maybe not anymore but they're the one thing from my childhood that still fascinate me.  I saw this article on entertainment weekly and I got really excited reading it.

My FAVORITE Disney Princess

2011: The year mermaids swim into movies, books, fashion, and maybe your local swimming pool

With the interest surrounding killer mermaids in the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, mermaids are having a bit of a pop culture moment. As far as fantasy creatures go, it’s safe to say that vampires dominated entertainment from 2008 to 2010 (although zombies also made a big impact), but looking forward, there are plenty of fishy-tailed women on the horizon in the next couple years: A live-action Little Mermaid is in the works; a spate of mermaid novels are coming out this year (even Stephenie Meyer is writing about mermaids now!); Mermaids of Hollywood, an app-turned book, will feature celebrities like Ginnifer Goodwin, Anna Faris, and the Kardashians photographed as mermaids by Mark Anderson; and rumors have popped up of a TV show based on the YouTube series The 3 Tails (errr, not sure about this one … maybe TLC could give it a season).
To understand this unusual trend on the rise, I talked to author and expert on all things mermaids Carolyn Turgeon, who released the aptly titled novel Mermaid earlier this month. Her extensive research on the subject became bigger than her novel, turning into the basis of her fascinating, comprehensive blog, I Am A Mermaid. She also plans on writing a nonfiction book about the appeal of mermaids throughout history and the current practice of “mermaiding” — which is basically putting on a tail and swimming around in oceans or local pools (more on that later). Her research has taken her everywhere from Iceland (which is apparently merman central — who knew?) to Warsaw, and she’s spoken to a sirenology expert at Wellesley and even Tim Gunn about mermaids in our culture.
So why all the fascination with mermaids? We are all plenty familiar with the Disney-fied version of the mermaid wanting to be a part of our world, but the real appeal of mermaids in fiction might be a little more adult. Turgeon speculates that our culture is in “kind of a weird time, sexually,” and interest in mermaids may reflect that. “The mermaid is this really weird, beautiful, dangerous, hybrid symbol,” says Turgeon. “On one hand, she’s incredibly sexual with her bare breasts and her long hair, singing to and enchanting sailors. But on the other hand, she’s half fish. She has no genitals, and she’s totally inaccessible because she lives at the bottom of the sea.” It’s analogous to the appeal of the Twilight series, in which Edward and Bella experience all sorts of sexual tension but can’t act on their urges, at least at first, because of the danger and unpredictability of vampires. There’s also the image of the mermaid as the romantic outcast: “Mermaids are the ultimate outsider,” Turgeon explains. That duality of danger and beauty — the mermaid as part lovely ingenue, part fanged, scaly sea-demon — makes for a lot of potential dramatic thrills.

Jersey Shore: love it or hate it, it's still an obsession!

Ohhh the Jersey Shore.  I think most of us who saw the previews for season 1 a few years ago thought it was the most ridiculous concept and would immediately flop.....boy were we wrong!  I would like to take this time to congratulate MTV and the creators of the show on a crazy concept, well executed. They’ve made a fan out of me.

(Be aware that this post will most definitely be using guido lingo).

I didn't watch TV very much in college and so I watched the first 2 seasons randomly if I was watching MTV and there happened to be an episode on. Now, that I no longer have "Thirsty Thursdays" in my schedule, my Thursday nights were spent in bed, mindlessly drooling over all the idiotic dramatic juiciness put on by the guidos and guidettes on season 3 of the Jersey Shore.  I guess it's entertaining to see this (as self-proclaimed-guidette, Snooki claims) lifestyle.  The fights, the lingo, and the trashiness of it all!

This show caused a lot of controversy not only with audiences, but politicians as well.  The governor of NJ said the show was offensive and gave NJ a bad name.  1. Most of the cast members are not from NJ. 2. Having lived in NJ for 5 years, I’d say that the 3 cast members who are from NJ are perfect representations of the kids who I went to school with 3. They never mention representing NJ, only that they really love spending their summers there.  I don’t see any bad naming in that.

Let’s take a minute and think about the impact this show has had on us and the cast.
1.      Fist-pumping is no longer a signature move in the Jersey clubs.
2.      The Situation released an abs-workout video so that we flubbies can now know his secrets.
3.      The Situation, Snooki, and JWoww are now authors.
4.      “Grenade” “fresh to death” “smush” “gorilla” “pouf” and other guido lexicons have really eased our lives when it comes to describing people and things.
5.      Ronnie is now a spokesperson for Xenadrine and can become an even bigger “juice head” (oops, forgot that one in #4) than he already is.
6.      Sammi Sweetheart and The Situation have their own jewelry lines.

Sad, that my guilty pleasure is done for the season but I’m looking forward to il dramma in Italia next season.

Celebrity Divorces: Can the media get over it already?

Why is it big news when a celebrity couple files for divorce?  It's a statistic that, unfortunately, happens to half of all married couples, but you don't see it having a section next to obituaries and weddings with people posting about their break-ups.  I decided to write about this topic because a few weeks ago I saw that Ashlee Simpson was trending on twitter and decided to check it out (thinking she'd released a new song or something).  All the tweets were about her filing for divorce from her husband Pete Wentz.

Why does the media feel the need to let the public know that a couple is separating?  Then again, why does the media feel it's necessary to let us know about every single juicy detail of a famous person's life?  Had I written this back as a teen I would be considered a hypocrite since I'd eat-up the latest gossip and I found the lives of the rich and famous to be really interesting.  I'm not as obsessed anymore and I realize that these are everyday people who happened to choose a profession that gave them no privacy.  A lot of them do what they can to hang on to what little privacy they might have and I feel they deserve respect for that.

I guess the news on one's divorce isn't surprising but the background story can be.  I try not to pay attention to the break-up stories but there's one thing that does push my buttons and that is cheating.  Cheating is a huge deal in my book and I can't stand people who do it.  Even if it's the worst relationship you could possibly be in, why are you in it in the first place? and if your excuse is that you can't get out of it...that's just ridiculous.  Not only do I blame the cheaters but I have no sympathy for the ones who take the cheaters back (over, and over again).  At that point, you're just hurting yourself.

My parents are divorced and now we've become part of the divorce stats.  I'm indifferent to the whole divorce thing.  I think it's unfortunate and I hope that I'll never have to go through it but on the other hand it's something I can understand as being necessary to save the people of the relationship (not the relationship itself).  The world knows that divorce exists and it's become a "normal" issue so I don't see the point in the press bringing up celebrities' divorces over and over again.  I know that they think the public loves hearing about what's wrong with a person and how they've failed but, I feel, marriage is not something you mark someone as having failed.  Some things are just not meant to be.

The Good and Bad of 2011's Super Bowl Ads

This past Sunday millions of us tuned into Super Bowl XLV.  I didn't really pay attention to football this season and so I couldn't pick a favorite team during the game (Pats weren't in so I didn't really care).  While the rest of the family got excited watching the game I got excited during commercial breaks.

Was it just me or were there a lot of Bud and Doritos commercials?  I can't remember all of them but I do remember that I found the Doritos commercial with the guy going around licking people's fingers and pants very disturbing and gross.

You know I'm going to say that the Darth Vader commercial takes the win.  It was absolutely adorable and I can totally relate to that kid and how awesome he must have felt to be able to do something with his "power."  It was a great feel-good ad.  Honestly, it's the only commercial that really caught my attention and stuck in my mind.

Remeber actually enjoying snow days as a kid?

If April showers bring May flowers then what do the blizzards of December, January, and February bring?

As I type this post, I can see a few flurries out my window. A few years back, if I were sitting at a desk in school, I would probably be jumping out of my seat like every other kid.  It's unfortunate but as a young adult now, the snow is a pain and has become an enemy.  I remember snow being such an awesome thing to me when I was younger.  It helped me get out of school and it was fun to play with...probably the 2 most important things on a kids to-do-list in life.  Now, even if I have a snow day from work there's no fun in it.  The past 3 blizzards that have hit New England have me craving sipping a margarita on a sunny beach far far away from here.  I've had enough with the plowing, shoveling, salting, slipping, sliding, spinning, messiness of it all!  I haven't even had the chance to get my car washed since there's bad weather every other day.  Let's keep our fingers crossed that we're done for the rest of the winter season!

The one thing I should appreciate about these snow days now is that there's no having to make them up and I still get to have a spring break (sorry kiddies and teachers!) although, I guess there's no such thing as a spring break for me anymore is there?  Oh well, guess I'll be sipping on a margarita on the couch in front of the TV...not bad. :-)

This Dodge commercial basically sums up what we've been through for the past 2 months.
